Our first surprise?
The apartment's electrical system still had the original cloth-covered wires from when the building was erected in 1915 and our co-op board required us to have the entire system upgraded. Soon after we closed, our lovely plaster walls went from blank canvases full of potential to walls full of holes and trenches.
We learned that, amazingly, electricians can come in and tear holes into your walls without having to fix the damage. You have to call a completely different contractor for that. The wall repair nightmare will be the subject of a future blog entry.
We thought we'd complete our renovations in about six weeks after closing, but four months later there is still plenty of work to be done. This is the reason we haven't had a home-cooked meal in a very long time. We have no kitchen--no sink, no stove. (OK, we do have a sink and stove, but they're in our dining room). We are fortunate to have a microwave and are very grateful to Kashi and Healthy Choice for their tasty frozen dinners. Stay tuned for a future post about why we've gone so long without a kitchen.
